SSMaltBranded ProductBunnahabhain's Un-Chillfiltered 12 Year Old Single Islay Malt Whisky, Islay, Scotland, 70cl, Alc. 46.3%.
Owned by Burn Stewart and produced by Bunnahabhain Distillery.
Will malt whisky aficionado's tastebuds' be turning summersaults at the news that Burn Stewart Distillers, (producers of Bunnahabhain, Tobermory, Ledaig and Deanston ), are re-launching their entire range of malt whiskies as un-chillfiltered - and upping their alcohol level on the 12 year old from 40% Alc. to 46.3% Alc? This un-chillfiltered, 46.3% Alc., 12 year old malt was tasted against the old chillfiltered 40% Alc. version. The forty six percenter is darker in colour, light mahogany rather than dark straw, the aroma and flavour is more pronounced and therefore much easier to detect the notes of toffee, honey, peel fruits and oak. Un-chillfiltered, and the alcohol has been upped from 43% to 46.3% Alc., two things that have helped to increase the malt's flavour. Unfortunately, it has increased the flavour of the smoky peat to the degree that it completely overpowers all the other flavours of this dram.
